My love for the Outdoors

Born on a farm, nature was always part of my being. Sunrise, sunset: always spectacular.

Hiking is a favourite. My love for hiking started at the end of my first year at varsity when my late husband (then my 'boy friend') and I went on a hiking trip with some fellow students to do the Fanie Botha in the then Eastern Transvaal. We also did Soutpansberg and Rustenburg. Since I moved to Cape Town I did a two week-enders with our church: one in Worcester and one near Laingsburg. Lately, due to my feet problem, I restrict hiking to day trips, mostly on Table Mountain (my favourite), Helderberg, Jonkershoek and Paarl.

River rafting is another adventure that I enjoyed with my children. I did three trips with them on the Orange river, but after the last time, when I nearly drowned in the Gamkab, I am not sure if I can work up enough courage to go again.

Horse riding was another fun thing in my life. Lots of memories are highlights in my life: a beach ride in the Saldanha Nature Reserve, a mountain ride in Montagu, a winelands ride on Sevenwacht, to name a few. I have been diagnosed with spondylosis in 2011, so maybe horse riding will now remain a memory only.

I love the sea. I like strolling on the beach. Or just sit and watch the tide.
